Any fingerprint unlocks Galaxy S10, Samsung warns

Some have speculated that an "air gap" in the cheap accessory may be to blame, giving the sensor identical data through the screen protector/cover/case/whatever regardless of the finger applied.

After she installed a third-party screen protector on her Galaxy S10, her husband was able to unlock it, even though his fingerprints were not registered on the phone.

It's a shame, too, considering the biometric reader is among the most useful features of the latest Galaxy phones. Plastic or silicon screen protectors can stymie it, so Samsung has been recommending that buyers used approved protective devices.

Samsung told Reuters (via Engadget) that it's rolling out a software patch after it emerged that a Galaxy S10 flaw allowed any fingerprint to unlock the device. For now, maybe just use a good old code.

The issue, first reported by The Sun, stems from a British couple who found that their S10, when wearing a £2.70 gel protector case bought on eBay, could be unlocked via the in-screen fingerprint scanner by several of their unregistered digits.

The National's road to the World Series was not an easy one. "We're nine outs from the World Series", shortstop Trea Turner said. Games 3, 4 and, if necessary, 5 will be at Nationals Park. "There's not one thing you can point to", Goldschmidt said.

It's unclear how the security snafu works, but presumably some screen protectors will leave enough of the contours of your fingerprint behind to trick the scanner into thinking your finger is the one being scanned.

"We are investigating this issue and will be deploying a software patch soon".

Samsung will apparently address the Galaxy S10's security issues.

"When you place your thumb on the screen, it sends ultrasonic pulses to detect the 3D ridges and valleys of your unique fingerprint to quickly and accurately recognize you", the firm has said about the specific technology.

Fingerprint scanners are generally more secure than camera-based face unlock solutions, but not all fingerprint unlock solutions are created equally.
