Phil Hogan, Ireland's nominee for the new European Commission, is due to be confirmed as the EU's next Trade Commissioner later this morning, RTÉ News understands.

"This team will shape the European Way: we will take bold action against climate change, build our partnership with the United States, define our relations with a more self-assertive China and be a reliable neighbor, for example to Africa", she said in a statement.

"I will try to honour Italy and the government that proposed me, working in the interest of all European citizens".

Even if that is the case - which is not entirely certain given fierce British parliamentary opposition to the no-deal Brexit that Johnson says he is willing to impose - negotiations to work out Britain's relationship with the European Union will drag on for years.

Suica has been a member of the European Parliament (EP) since 2013.

"I want the European Green Deal to become Europe's hallmark", Von der Leyen explained her climate plans.

"I think it is very important to have together a very good free trade agreement because I think it will be determining the good relations we want to have in the future", von der Leyen said.

US, Taliban keep open door to talks after summit scrapped
On Sunday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that 'we've killed over a thousand Taliban in just the last 10 days'. The lead American negotiator, Zalmay Khalilzad, had been recalled to the United States, Pompeo added.

In a surprising move, Mrs von der Leyen approved the candidacy of former Hungarian justice minister László Trócsányi, who is believed to be one of the chief architects of Hungary's illiberal state, for the highly prestigious neighbourhood and enlargement portfolio.

Hogan is now serving as agriculture commissioner.

Von der Leyen said that the Commission should have a gender and geographical balance.

To do so, Timmermans will have to work hand-in-hand with the youngest of the commissioners, Lithuanian Virginijus Sinkevičius who is in charge of the "environment and oceans" portfolio - as well as with the commissioner for agriculture (Janusz Wojciechowski), health (Rovana Plumb), transport (Rovana Plumb), energy (Elisa Ferreira) or cohesion policies (Elisa Ferreira).

Gentiloni will take over from Pierre Moscovici, a former French finance minister who spent most his five-years as commissioner in battle with Italy over its colossal debt and chronic overspending.

Hogan would also lead talks with the United States at a time of deep transatlantic trade tensions over President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on the Europeans, among others.
