President Donald Trump's lawyer adamantly denied on Sunday that the president is under investigation, despite the president's tweets this week referring to one as a "witch hunt", NBC News reported.
The Washington Post story cited five officials who had been briefed on interview requests from special counsel Robert Mueller with three top intelligence officials to see if Trump had attempted to obstruct justice.
"No, Chris. Let me be crystal clear so you completely understand: We have not received nor are we aware of any investigation of the president of the United States", Sekulow replied.
Earlier on Friday, Trump said he was being investigated for firing former FBI Director James Comey.
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump has lashed out at the investigators driving the Russian Federation investigation as "very bad and conflicted people", responding angrily to reports that the special counsel is looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.
Sekulow told Wallace that Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey last month was "based on numerous events, including recommendations from his attorney general and the deputy attorney general's office". Trump's tweet, however, used only 111 characters and Trump has not been shy about using multiple tweets to convey a singular message. His tweet about a "WITCH HUNT" conducted by "bad" people is just a Trumpian version of what appears to be the official White House line - that this is somehow a partisan attempt to delegitimize the Trump presidency.
Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Trump is "returning us to the forgotten rhetoric of the Cold War". "And now he's being investigated by the Department of Justice", Sekulow said.
Trump Attorney: Trump Is Not Under Investigation
Rubio says: "If it involved working with Americans, whether wittingly or unwittingly, that needs to be part of" the investigation. King said the "collusion, the cooperation aspect of the investigation is not over". "It's all about him".
"You've now said that he's being investigated", Wallace said. Comey later revealed that he orchestrated a disclosure of details about conversations with Trump to prompt the appointment of a special counsel.
Sekulow claimed the president is not spending a lot of time composing the tweets, but defended them as a means of speaking directly to voters, saying "he's responding to what he's seeing in the media in a way in which he thinks is appropriate to talk to those people that put him in office".
In another indication of the seriousness of the probe, Michael Cohen, a personal attorney to Trump, said he has retained attorney Stephen Ryan, a former assistant USA attorney, to represent him in the ongoing probes. "The President's response was as it related to the Washington Post report".
Rosenstein finds himself in a spot as he could face the President anger or answer questions about his own future role supervising Mueller when he could become a witness in the special counsel's probe.
"No, Chris, I deal with fact and law", Sekulow said.
