Shooter James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., was shot and died later Wednesday of his wounds in the hospital.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.

Trump says Scalise "continues his very fearless fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".

Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said. Although infection remains a risk, Scalise's vitals had stabilized Friday afternoon.

"He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding", the statement said.

Scalise has received an outpouring of prayers from members of both parties. "And that can cause damage to these organs".

"The congressman's status remains critical", Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, told reporters.

The business of the House is resuming a day after a rifle-wielding attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game. The congressman's risk of death was now substantially lower, because doctors have controlled the bleeding, and his vital signs have stabilized. Shimkus says the main problem is those on the extreme right and left want ideal agreement on their views, which goes against American democracy. He has required surgery several times since the shooting. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

Counterprotester and Austinite Daisy Rios said she believed the anti-Sharia movement has been "co-opted by the alt-right". Michael Williams, a Republican candidate for governor, spoke to the rally, according to his spokesman, Seth Weathers.

President Trump urged Americans on Thursday to pray for Rep. Steve Scalise as he fights for life a day after being shot on a baseball field. "They're all sending their love and support to the Scalise family, and Steve, in his own way, may have brought some unity to our long-divided country".

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited the hospital where Scalise was being treated Wednesday evening.

The senior Republican suffered extensive injuries and was in critical condition on Wednesday night.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at Wednesday's practice and gave medical help after the shooting, said it would have "been awful" if the game had been canceled, and said Scalise would want it to go on.

Trump's comments came at the beginning of his speech in Miami Friday announcing a partial rollback of ties to Cuba - reversing changes made by President Barack Obama's administration.

House Speaker Paul Ryan has paid a visit to wounded Majority Whip Steve Scalise at the hospital.

Scalise's Chief of Staff shared a message from the congressman's family at a Friday press conference. The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content. He's been undergoing repeat surgeries.

Congressional Democrats and Republicans teamed up at Washington, D.C.'s major league baseball park Thursday night for two reasons - to carry on a 108-year-old tradition and to honor wounded Rep. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.
