Shooter James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., was shot and died later Wednesday of his wounds in the hospital.
Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.
Trump says Scalise "continues his very fearless fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".
Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said. Although infection remains a risk, Scalise's vitals had stabilized Friday afternoon.

The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media.
