President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited the hospital where Scalise was being treated Wednesday evening.

Sava estimates there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's pelvis and says doctors don't intend to try to remove them all, as that could cause more harm than good.

Hodgkinson, who had lashed out on social media against Trump and Republicans, was shot and killed by police officers including members of Scalise's security detail who responded. The hospital said Scalise will undergo additional operations and "will be in the hospital for some time".

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at Wednesday's practice and gave medical help after the shooting, said it would have "been awful" if the game had been canceled, and said Scalise would want it to go on.

Sources close to the senior Republican said he remained in a critical condition.

Colleagues who visited Scalise, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, sounded generally upbeat, but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier.

Speaking today from the White House, President Trump said Scalise's condition- initially announced as "stable" - was "much more hard that people even thought at the time".

President Trump said last week he was under investigation . "It's that simple. The president is not under investigation".

"The congressman's status remains critical", Dr. Sava. The others were Capitol Police officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey; Zack Barth, a staffer for Texas Rep. Roger Williams; and Mike Mika, an activist and former congressional staffer.

Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation".

Scalise was among five people wounded when the shooter sprayed rifle fire at congressional Republicans practicing for the game.

A Democrat ally of Steve Scalise asked for better protection for himself and his fellow lawmakers a week before the House of Representatives Majority Whip was left fighting for his life after Wednesday's shooting at a Congressional baseball practice.

As the House returned to business, lawmakers sought some semblance of normalcy even as they offered prayers for the wounded and echoed the president in pledges of unity.

The Congressional Baseball Game will begin at 7 p.m. ET.

It is a rare and genuine opportunity for Democrats and Republicans to put their divisions aside and show those gathered in the stadium and watching across the USA, that they are not just politicians - they are people and players.
