Brooks Koepka tied a record for the lowest score on a par-72 major with a score of 16 under in winning the U.S. Open on Sunday.

It was at the U.S. Open three years ago when Koepka tied for fourth that helped earn a PGA Tour card, and he powered his way from obscurity to his first PGA Tour victory in Phoenix, his first Ryder Cup team last fall and now a major championship.

Spieth had struggled on the greens all week at Erin Hills and both of his bogeys on Sunday came from three-putting, but the former world number one was pleased not to have "thrown in the towel".

Despite rallying back with two closing birdies, a bogey at the 18th sealed 30-year-old Harman's fate.

Torrential rain that doused the 7,818-yard layout at Erin Hills overnight presented the field with a feast of birdie chances, transforming the leaderboard into a sea of red as dusk fell.

The day belonged to the 27-year-old and we take a look at Sunday's social media highlights in our Twitter moment below.

GOP lawmaker Scalise still critical though doctors 'encouraged'
Griner remained hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition. Scalise, 51, and four others were wounded when an IL man opened fire Wednesday morning on the team practice in Alexandria.

The resulting birdie reduced his deficit to playing partner Koepka to four shots, Koepka having followed birdies on the first and second with another from 35 feet on the eighth. Only six players had ever reached double digits under par in the previous 116 times at the U.S. Open. And then he made birdie on the next hole. Palmer shot a 65 after going into the final round trailing by seven shots. "The greens are flawless - some of the best greens I've ever putted on". I wouldn't want to play with the opposite wind because there would be some holes that would be a bit stupid. His 16-under ties a US Open weekend record.

Brian Harman has a one-shot advantage at 12 under atop a crowded leaderboard.

Matsuyama meanwhile, produced an inspired round to raise hopes of a grandstand finish after he had begun the day six off the pace.

Justin Thomas weighed in on the hike after his record-setting 9-under 63 on Saturday. If you read my post, it says I love the design.

Of the early players, Jordan Spieth is one of the few that is under par for the day. While stronger winds made tee-to-green play more hard during the final round, they may have also helped Spieth on the greens where he needed only 29 putts.

But two-time major victor Jordan Spieth proved a good score was still possible, the 2015 champion carding five birdies and two bogeys in a 69 to finish one over par overall.
