Speaking earlier Friday in Miami, Trump said Scalise "took a bullet for all of us" when he was shot.

President Donald Trump called for unity in the aftermath of Wednesday's shooting at a GOP baseball practice in Alexandria that has left Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise in a critical condition.

During the assault, Scalise was shot by a 7.62 mm rifle bullet in his hip area and received serious injuries, including massive blood loss.

Scalise, 51, and four others were wounded when an IL man opened fire Wednesday morning on the team practice in Alexandria.

His risk of death is "substantially lower" than it was when he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, and "I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Sava said.

Nonetheless, said Sava, "We fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run".

The man who opened fire on Republicans practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game Wednesday morning had a list of names on him at the time, a source confirmed to WTOP.

Russian Federation investigation: Trump 'considers firing' Robert Mueller
What is Trump so afraid of in the Russian Federation investigation? The president sacked Comey in early May. ROSENSTEIN: No, I have not. "And I'm not going to speculate on what he will or will not do", Sekulow said.

"The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time." the Medstar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement, adding that Scalise has "improved in the last 24 hours".

"He was as critical as he can be when he came in", he said.

As Scalise continued his grueling recovering, law enforcement officials proceeded with their investigation of the Wednesday attack at a suburban Virginia park, where shooter James Hodgkinson wounded several other people in addition to Scalise. And Scalise, who suffered severe blood loss, had multiple units of blood transfusions.

Sava said the congressman remains sedated but was able to "respond to family members" and physicians. "I'm prayerful he will pull through, and I hope he does", he said. "We are especially appreciative of the strong outpouring of love and support from our neighbors, friends, from Louisiana and across the country, as well as from President Trump, Vice President Pence, and all of Steve's colleagues who have reached out to us during this most challenging time".

Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration. They released photos of guns similar to the handgun and rifle that were used in the attack, which officials have said were purchased legally. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content.

Later, the crowd burst into applause as Capitol Police Officer David Bailey - who was injured as he pursued the shooter - hobbled to the mound on crutches and tossed the ceremonial first pitch. Griner remained hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.
