Police say one robber targeted the restaurant's safe while the other robber held the men at gunpoint.
Officials identified the 56-year-old man who died during a robbery at a Madison Culver's Thursday.
"You have an instance where the victim was literally scared to death", said Chief Mike Koval with the Madison Police.
Since he died during the commission of a crime, Koval said they are treating the case as a homicide, and will recommend felony murder charges be filed when the thieves are caught.
Original Doom 2 3.5-inch Floppies on Sale From John Romero
Romero announced the sale on Twitter , pledging to sign the discs if the highest bidder requests it. But 60 bids later, it has hit the $900 mark, with the auction scheduled to end at 6:13 a.m.
Police said one of the four contractors died following medical distress during the armed robbery. Koval said they are casting a wide net in their search, including a review of camera footage from multiple businesses in the area.
Police added they believe it as appears as though the robbery were aware of patterns regarding the store's hours, which were changed on Monday night so staff members could attend a picnic together.
Four contractors were working on a remodeling project inside the Culver's, 2102 W. Beltline Highway, around 3 a.m. when the two masked and armed men entered the restaurant, according to Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain. The restaurant will re-open when authorities have concluded their investigation. "One is said to be 20's to 30's, around 6'3".
A press conference is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
