In a telling piece from The Hollywood Reporter, several all-new details from the fiasco of Lucasfilm's ousting of the directing team behind The LEGO Movie and 21 Jumpstreet, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, from the second Star Wars standalone film - the still untitled Han Solo - new details shine a light on several troubling problems. In one instance, the trade was told by sources that Lord and Miller only did three different setups (camera placements) for a scene shot on the Millennium Falcon, versus the 12 to 15 that a movie of this size usually does. The infamous "creative differences" in this instance seem to have stemmed from the improvisational style Lord and Miller employed, and also concerns that the film was too comedic for Lucasfilm's tastes. "I would trust Kathy with any of the decisions she has to make, because she's been making them amazingly for 30-plus years".
Lawrence Kasdan would not allow this and demanded that every line was said word for word. Some insiders say that while the talent of Lord and Miller is undeniable, nothing in their background prepared them for a movie of this size and scope.
Lucasfilm also replaced the film's editor Chris Dickens with Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning editor Pietro Scalia. To appease him, Lord and Miller did takes with his dialogue, then additional improv takes; Kennedy, who was already displeased with the limited coverage that was being provided to the film's editors and with star Alden Ehrenreich's performance-she hired an acting coach for him after seeing initial footage, a rarity so late in a production-was not having this impudence. This did not sit well with Lord and Miller who were not prepared for Kasdan's role as their "shadow director".
