CNN and USA Today filed lawsuits Thursday ordering the Federal Bureau of Investigation to hand over James Comey's memos which detailed private meetings he had with President Donald Trump, according to The Hill.

The White House narrative has been that Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the man who allegedly told him to fire the FBI Director James Comey, did so because of the ineptitude and disruptions caused by Comey during the Clinton investigation.

It was Rosenstein who appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to run the investigation into Russian government interference with the 2016 election - and, importantly, it is Rosenstein who still retains the power to fire Mueller, as President Trump is said to have mused about in recent days.

Reports have been mounting that Mueller is investigating Trump for potential obstruction of justice related to his firing of Comey.

The website reported that Trump will sometimes interrupt conversations with associates to say, "I'm not under investigation". Trump said on Twitter, calling the probe into him a "Witch Hunt".

Meanwhile, members of Trump's transition team were ordered to preserve documents and other material related to the Russian Federation investigation, the New York Times reported.

"I was going to fire Comey", Trump told NBC News in an interview taped May 11.

He tweeted, "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my "collusion with the Russians", nobody has been able to show any proof".

But a person close to Trump's outside legal team who asked not to be named said Trump was merely reacting to news reports and hadn't been notified by the special counsel that he is a subject of the investigation. Comey testified that he requested Sessions never again leave him alone with Trump. "Witch Hunt", the President wrote in his tweet on Friday morning (local time).

The statement came as word surfaced that Mueller is now reportedly looking into the finances and business dealings of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser. ABC reported he was considering recusal, but the DOJ pushed back against the report.

The widened Russian Federation probe could have far-reaching repercussions for Trump s presidency, transforming his closest aides into witnesses and sucking yet more political oxygen out of the West Wing.
