Uber is (finally) rolling out tipping

The in-app tipping option is now available in Seattle, Minneapolis and Houston, Uber said in an email sent to drivers Tuesday morning and later posted on the company's website.

Every dollar a rider tips will go straight to the driver, Uber said in a news release Tuesday. Tipping is part of a broader set of features San Francisco-based Uber rolled out on Tuesday, which also includes paying drivers while they wait for passengers, as the company begins a months-long push to improve working conditions for drivers. After a trip has ended, riders will have 30 days to add a tip. Uber's former president Jeff Jones, who left the company in the wake of Susan Fowler's explosive allegations about the ride-hailing company, was brought on board specifically to address its relationship with drivers, to little avail. "You've told us what you want, and now it's time we step up and give you the driving experience you deserve, because simply put, Uber wouldn't exist without you".

The auto service's chief rival Lyft has long offered drivers the possibility of tips. Those who drive for the company will also get a cancellation fee if their rider cancels after two minutes (instead of five), get paid starting two minutes after arriving to pick up a passenger regardless of whether the passenger has entered the vehicle, and have the option to purchase driver protection injury insurance (among other things).

Quest earnings are available for Instant Pay: Drivers will be able to immediately cash out their tips and earnings. In total, Lyft drivers have made more than $200 million in tips.

The Independent Drivers Guild, a pseudo-union entity approved by Uber as a representative for its drivers, praised Uber's move to introduce tipping.
