A woman from North Carolina has been charged with attempted murder and child abuse after police say she was caught on camera repeatedly trying to smother her one-year-old son in his room at a Charlotte hospital.

Charlotte TV station WSOC cited police sources who said Dixon tried to smother the child four times within 15 minutes.

Employees at Levine Children's Hospital were alerted to the alleged attempts at infanticide when a monitor indicated there were irregularities with the baby's vital signs, specifically fluctuations in his breathing.

Police say hospital workers saw Dixon try to suffocate the boy when they watched surveillance video of the room. She remained in jail on $200,000 Monday, reported Laurinburg Exchange. The boy remains hospitalized in the care of family members, according to police.

The Department of Social Services is assisting with the investigation.
