Warmbier suffered extensive tissue loss in all regions of the brain, doctors said, but he showed no signs of physical trauma and medical tests offered no conclusive evidence as to the cause of his neurological injuries.

"I'm able to wear the jacket that Otto wore when he confessed", the emotional father said.

Fred Warmbier called the North Korean regime "a pariah" and "terroristic" while addressing the media for about 10 minutes Thursday. North Korean officials charged Warmbier with "hostile acts against the state".

"It is my understanding that Ambassador Yun and his team, at the direction of the President [Donald Trump], aggressively pursued resolution of the situation", Warmbier said.

North Korea claims that Warmbier developed botulism.

Warmbier's parents have been fighting for the release of their son, a University of Virginia student, since his arrest. Warmbier's mother is by his side in the hospital and doctors are reportedly planning an update on his condition later on Thursday.

They said an examination of the rest of Mr Warmbier's body found no evidence of fractures that might be evidence of severe beatings.

"We don't believe anything they (North Korea) say", Fred Warmbier said.

The 22-year-old has not spoken or "engaged in any purposeful movements" since arriving in the country Tuesday night, said Dr. Daniel Kanter, professor of neurology and director of the Neurocritical Care Program.

The college student was sentenced that March to 15 years of hard labor for theft and spent most of his imprisonment in a coma, according to his family.

"There is no reason for any civilized nation to keep his condition secret and deny him medical treatment for so long", Fred Warmbier said at a press conference in Cincinnati.

At the Otto Warmbier press conference given by his father, Fred, it was revealed that the Warmbiers don't believe North Korea's explanation of how their son ended up in a coma. He said the president was "very candid" during the telephone call and told him Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and other USA officials worked hard to negotiate Otto's release.

Otto was detained in North Korea on January 2, 2016 at the Pyongyang International Airport after visiting that country with Young Pioneer Tours. "I was in shock". North Korean officials agreed to let Swedish officials visit Warmbier and three other American who are still being detained by North Korea. "There's no excuse for the way the North Koreans treated our son and no excuse for the way they have treated so many others".

"The burden of our ordeal has been eased by the support we have experienced, not only from our friends in Cincinnati, but through OH, at the University of Virginia, throughout the United States and, indeed, from around the world", Warmbier said. Otto Warmbier was finally repatriated 17 months into his detention, after the U.S. State Department bargained for his freedom, under the direction of President Trump.
