The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on two Russian officials and three dozen other individuals and companies over Russian activities in Ukraine.

On Monday, Russia threatened to shoot down U.S. warplanes over Syria after a U.S. Navy fighter shot down a Syrian warplane.

The Minsk agreements called for a compromise between the two nations, but Russian President Vladimir Putin has continued to exert military force to keep control in areas populated with ethnic Russians.

The Trump administration has generally seemed reluctant to issue diplomatic punishments to Russian Federation, despite the US intelligence findings of Kremlin interferences in the 2016 election.

The new sanctions on Russian Federation announced by the Treasury came after the U.S. Senate passed legislation last week that would impose new measures against Russian Federation and limit Trump's ability to roll back sanctions against that country in the future.
