Following the Georgia results, Trump took to Twitter to ridicule Democrats for their losing streak. But Republicans are now boasting a "5-0" record in special elections for seats Democrats sought to flip - counting Georgia twice, as Ossoff was unable to lock down an outright win in the initial contest and lost to Handel in the runoff.
Ossoff initially campaigned on a promise to "make Trump furious" but more recently refrained from taking on the president as he tried to win over centrist voters. With the party effectively leaderless and divided between economic populists supportive of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and centrists such as Ossoff, a long hard climb lies before the Democrats should they hope to seize Congress in the 2018 mid-term elections. But they still lost those races, and the Georgia Sixth was supposed to be their best opportunity to get a win.
Scarborough said moving further left will only cost Democrats more elections, particularly in the South.
But it's part of a larger trend of the Republican margins in these areas shrinking. Republican Ralph Norman won in SC, defeating Democrat Archie Parnell. "The message was that Republicans would feel awful if they had to watch Democrats celebrate".
Investors Catching Stocks Huntsman Corporation (HUN)
Bayesian Capital Management LP acquired a new stake in shares of Huntsman Corporation during the fourth quarter worth $197,000. The lowest 12-month price target for the shares is $21.00, which would be decrease of about -15% of its current value.
The president is now under pressure from several investigations into his campaign's alleged collusion with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election, and promised healthcare and tax reform has stalled in Congress.
Democrat Rob Quist raised $3.3 million and spent $2.6 million, according to FEC filings. The previous three general elections were decided by an average of 14 points, and Trump won the district by 21 points. Republicans won these races in Kansas, Montana and SC, but Georgia had been widely touted as a referendum on Trump's impact on the GOP leading up to the 2018 midterms.
So in Georgia, the #NeverTrump voters likely played a role in the results.
Despite having the White House and both houses of Congress in Republican hands, Trump's ambitious plans have been largely stalled by Democratic opposition - though judicial reprimands and Republican infighting have also dealt Trump blows as he tries to overhaul health care, cut taxes and implement a contentious travel ban and "extreme vetting". The Democrats had hoped to pull off a huge upset, so this is a major disappointment - especially given how much money they'd ploughed into this race. In 2018, it would be great to see 435 Democratic House candidates who are all bolder and more progressive than Jon Ossoff. All of those districts were GOP districts.
