A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper died in the line of duty while on I-75 Saturday evening, FHP said in a statement.

Sgt. William T. Bishop, 52, had parked his patrol vehicle in the inside emergency lane to investigate a crash, according to troopers. While outside his vehicle, troopers said Bishop was struck and killed by another vehicle.

Southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for several hours as law enforcement investigated the crash.

Bishop was outside of his patrol auto on southbound I-75 during his shift Saturday evening when he was struck by a vehicle, according to a news release.
