Shooter went to Republican baseball practice with list of names

In addition to Scalise, a police officer, a congressional aide and a lobbyist were shot on Wednesday morning when a man opened fire as the Republican lawmakers practiced for the game in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia.

"The congressman's status remains critical", Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Centre, told reporters on Friday.

Congressional Democrats and Republicans put aside their political differences Thursday to play in the traditional Congressional Baseball Game a day after a horrific shooting left Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and others wounded.

The hospital said Scalise underwent another surgery Saturday to treat the gunshot wound.

The doctors said that while Scalise remains in critical condition, they "are encouraged by improvement in his condition".

With an injury like the one Scalise endured, a patient is very likely to have long-term complications, although the complications would depend on exactly which body structures were injured, Evans said. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", the hospital wrote, "on behalf of the Scalise family".

He was supposed to play with his teammates in Thursday night's game against Democratic members of Congress, but lawmakers said the game will go on.

"By playing tonight we are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence or assaults on our democracy", said US President Donald Trump, appearing on the park's giant screen but not attending. "We wanted to show our support especially for Congressman Scalise and everybody".

Fox News reported that it had confirmed the existence of a list found in Hodgkinson's possession, containing names of Republicans.

He also said that Officer Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle, is in "good condition".

Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch.

Since then he has had more than one surgery and doctors expect he will continue to have more in the near future.

Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.

Scalise was one of several people shot by suspect James T. Hodgkinson ― a 66-year-old resident of IL ― who targeted a GOP team baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday. But he said that the congressman has a "good possibility" of making an excellent recovery. Scalise, the third most powerful Republican in the House, was shot through the hip.
