Jobless rate rises in Pennsylvania for second straight month

Weld County's unemployment rate rose three-tenths of a percentage point from April, but it still remains one of the lowest in the state, according to new numbers released Friday by the state Department of Labor and Employment. The state's labor force decreased by 5,445 to 2,328,694 people in May.

The national unemployment rate was down from 4.4 percent in April and 4.7 percent in May 2016. Grand Island's preliminary rate plunged to 2.9 percent from 3.5 percent in April. The rate in May 2016 was 3.3 percent.

Manufacturing jobs are at their lowest number since at least 1990.

That stands in contrast with losses in trade, transportation and utilities, which lost 1,000 jobs and professional and business services, which lost 2,400 jobs last month. The nationwide unemployment rate in May was 4.3 percent. The number of people unemployed was up slightly compared with April but was down by more than 200 compared with May 2016.

In general, more thrust is placed on most recent actions by assigning higher weights to it than those assigned to past movements. The short sellers will then buy the stock back at a much lower price and replace the borrowed shares, pocketing the difference.

Nonfarm employment was 1,035,008, up 12,125 over the year and up 10,664 over the month.

In the San Antonio area, employment fell by 2,900 in nonseasonally-adjusted numbers.

The unemployment rates for Grand Island, Lincoln and Omaha have not been seasonally adjusted, so they can not be directly compared with the state unemployment rate.
