The wife of a man who shot a US congressman and four others at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia said she had no idea he was going to the Washington D.C. area to commit such a horrific act, KTVI in St. Louis reports.
Yesterday morning, police say, Hodgkinson fired dozens of bullets at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., wounding five, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La.
Sue Hodgkinson says she can't explain the actions of her estranged husband, James T. Hodgkinson.
"I just want to let people know he wasn't evil, just exhausted of some of politics going on", a friend of Hodgkinson said.
Hodgkinson's attack shocked those who knew him as a popular and "laid-back" blue-collar worker in his hometown of Belleville, Illinois.
"I just want y'all (reporters) to go away, and leave my neighbors in peace", Sue said.
On Google's review page for JHT Inspections, one recent reviewer claimed that she had hired Hodgkinson to inspect her home and gotten a bad feeling about him during the transaction. Hodgkinson said repeatedly that she saw no signs her husband was planning violence.
James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Illinois was identified as the shooter. Many liberals blamed Sarah Palin for the attack because the former Alaska governor had released a map showing several congressional districts in crosshairs, despite the fact that the shooter's reasons were not coherent nor connected to Palin's map. Police shot Hodgkinson, who later died. She said she and her husband haven't been together since March.
A half-dozen patrons gathered at the tavern Thursday afternoon for the $1 taco special and to shoot pool said Hodgkinson didn't hang out there and wasn't known to them.
"Let's let this tragedy bring us together as Americans and realize that the political rhetoric and the rhetorical hate speech we see in the news media and we see it on social media... has to stop", Doyle said.
"I've had enough", she said. Now we know where he went.
