Hodgkinson opened fire on Republican members of the United States Congress as they practiced for a charity baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia, Wednesday morning, authorities said. Hodgkinson, acting as a lone gunman in the incident, shot several victims including majority whip of the House of Representatives Steve Scalise.

And he served as a presidential campaign volunteer for Bernie Sanders, who took to the Senate floor to condemn his act of violence. With the chief deputy of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department by her side, she said she felt "horrible" about the actions of her husband of almost 30 years.

Dozens of congressional staffers erupted into boos, jeers and even vulgar gesticulations Thursday when President Trump appeared in a video at the Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park. "I can't wrap my head around it".

She said her husband sold nearly all of his possessions before leaving their Belleville home early this year, shortly after their daughter and her 2-year-old son came home. She said Hodgkinson was home all day, and she suspected he left because "he just wanted a break from it".

Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., said he was physically attacked at a town hall event several weeks back. A hospital statement said Scalise was doing better over the previous 24 hours but would be in the hospital for some time. "The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

"At the request of the family, we will continue to provide periodic updates", the statement concludes.

"He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours", reads a statement provided Thursday by MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the medical facility now treating Scalise.

Scalise was fielding balls at second base when he was hit in the hip, and sustained grievous injuries as the bullet traveled through his abdomen and injured internal organs.

There is a GoFundMe page established for Monica , who is survived by his wife and two daughters, as well as his grandchildren. The reward for information leading to their arrest grew Wednesday to $90,000, contributed by multiple agencies, Sills said.

"I think that the president contributed to this significantly", said Rep. James Clyburn of SC, the No. 3 House Democrat. "While the attack today was a awful surprise, Matt's presence on the ball field, helping longtime colleagues and friends was not", Mika's family said. Griner was shot in the ankle and is in good condition in the hospital.

Zack Barth, a legislative correspondent to Texas Rep. Roger Williams, says he's "blessed to be alive" after being shot in the leg after a gunman opened fire on a group of Congressman at a baseball field on Wednesday.

Wagner said there was no way to predict that Hodgkinson would take such violent action.

"We're gonna have to see", he said. The bureau said it had recovered a cell phone, computer, and camera in the van.

SHAPIRO: This shooting has obviously made tonight's baseball game far more meaningful to members of Congress. Talk about why this tradition is so important to lawmakers.

And because the shooter's political views drove him to commit a insane and violent act, all Washington is on edge as Scalise fights for his life.

Most fans were in the correct mood, however, chanting U-S-A and giving a loud standing ovation to Capitol Police Special Agent David Bailey, who along with two other special agents at the field Wednesday were credited with saving the lives of dozens of lawmakers and staffers.
