51-year-old Scalise and three others were wounded when a man identified as James Hodgkinson, 66, from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, opened fire on the lawmakers.
Colleagues who visited Mr Scalise were generally upbeat but spoke more in terms of hope than the confident predictions in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
It is one of the most anticipated events of summer at the Capitol, with Democrats and Republicans splitting the 79 games that have been played over the years 39-39, with one tie.
The FBI said it was investigating the shooter's "activities and social media impressions" in the months leading up to the attack. Democratic coach Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania called Republican coach Rep. Joe L. Barton of Texas to the microphone and said his team wanted the trophy to be displayed in Scalise's office until the Louisiana congressman returns. Also shot were a congressional aide, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police officer.
The statement from the hospital comes after President Trump, in an address from the White House, called Scalise a "fighter" and promised him the prayers of the nation and "frankly the entire world".

Scalise, who was shot in the left hip, was in critical condition Thursday at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Democrats were on a winning streak for several years before the Republicans won the last game in a squeaker, 8-7.
"As far as winning and losing, I think that's far from anybody's mind right now", Flake said.
Dozens of congressional staffers erupted into boos, jeers and even vulgar gesticulations Thursday when President Trump appeared in a video at the Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park.
The game raised more than a million dollars for charity.
