Former French Open runner-up Simona Halep staged a remarkable fightback and saved a match point to reach the semi-finals with a 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-0 win over Elina Svitolina.

Halep came close to a maiden grand slam title here in 2014, losing 6-4 6-7 6-4 to Maria Sharapova in the final.

Ostapenko has been creating history throughout the week, as she became the first Latvian to reach a Grand Slam semifinal on Tuesday when she bounced 11th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Ostapenko, who hails from Latvia, is the first unseeded women's tennis player to reach the final stage at Roland Garros since 1983 and the first Latvian to ever reach a Grand Slam final.

Third seed Halep looked to be heading out after going a set and 5-1 down.

After Halep controlled the first set, Pliskova found her range on her big serve and forehand in the second.

"I was scared, because they told me that it's broken", said Halep, who said she still feels pain during matches.

Czech second seed Plíšková would have become world number one next week had she won the second semi-final.

"I said that the match is lost".

Ostapenko had never been past the third round at a major until this week but she didn't let the occasion faze her as she took the first set on a tiebreaker. I expect her to give everything she has, to hit all the balls, to play with confidence.

Halep will enter this year's final as the favourite but either way it's guaranteed there will be a first-time Grand Slam victor on Saturday.

"I think I would beat 99 per cent of the girls with the way I played today. I'm just happy with the way I celebrated my birthday".

Svitolina, who had been two points from defeat in the fourth round against Petra Martic, finished the quarter-final with 45 unforced errors.

"It s an wonderful feeling right now", said 25-year-old Halep after her fifth win in six meetings against Pliskova, the world number three. "I'm sad today but tomorrow is another day and life continues, there's nothing I can do". The flat-hitting Pliskova, who had a 2-5 win-loss record at Roland Garros entering the tournament, was happy with her performance.

There's a great deal on the line for Halep in Saturday's final.

Ostapenko, ranked 47 in the world, will now play Romania's Simona Halep in the final. But at last year's US Open, she lost in the Final, and she made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open to start the 2017 Grand Slam season.

Bacsinszky needed strapping added to her right thigh at 4-3 in the first set but it did not seem to affect her movement. However, it was Halep that got the upper hand as she won the decider 6-3.
