Official state news outlet Xinhua said the blast has taken place near a kindergarten in Fengxian County in the east of the country. The official newspaper Global Times reported on its website that the incident was caused by the explosion of a gas cylinder at a roadside food stall, citing a witness identified only by the surname Shi. Xu dropped out of school due to neurological disorders.
A survivor told broadcaster CCTV from her hospital bed that the school gate had just opened for kids to leave, though none had come out when the fireball erupted.
The blast at the Chuangxin Kindergarten in Xuzhou's Fengxian county occurred at 4:50 p.m. before school had let out for the day and no students or teachers from the kindergarten were among the injured, according to a statement from local authorities.
Footage of the scene showed some people covered in blood while others appeared to be unconscious and some even with their clothes burned off. Children were seen among the injured.
Videos purportedly from the scene and posted on social media showed children and adults lying on the ground, some bleeding. The videos showed ambulances arriving and medics wheeling people into an emergency room.

Police say an explosion has struck the entrance to a kindergarten in eastern China, with reports saying there have been casualties.
Authorities have said that the investigation into the explosion is being treated as a criminal case rather than an accident.
Public Security Minister Guo Shengkun "demanded enhanced checks of possible risks at densely populated venues" and his deputy was dispatched to the area to conduct the probe, Xinhua news agency reported.
It is the latest in a string of tragedies to strike school children in China in recent months. Last year, a knife-wielding assailant injured seven students outside a primary school in a northern city.
