"Some suspected Boko Haram attempted to attack a village far off and our troops ranged (subdued) them", Nigerian military spokesman Brigadier-General Sani Usman said in a short statement.
But Lt. -Col. Kinsley Samuel, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations Department, said that the situation was under control.
The Borno state government has called for calm following the attack on a town in Born by Boko Haram fighters.
The attacks took place just a day before Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is set to visit the city.
The military immediately moved in with fighter jets to push backward the attackers, multiple military sources said.
Senate Committee Hearing With Intelligence Chiefs

But another statement read, "Boko Haram gunmen have attacked Jiddari Polo community in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in North-East Nigeria".
He added that residents of the area who had planned to flee their homes were reassured with rapid response of Nigerian troops.
Wednesday attack is the first in recent time that Maiduguri would be coming under siege of the Boko Haram terrorists though there have been incidence of suicide attacks in the last couple of months.
Mr. Usman assured that there was heavy security presence in the area and the situation was now under control. Casualty figure yet to be confirmed.
