Announcing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's weekend visit to Astana, Kazakhstan, where India will be admitted as a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the External Affairs Ministry said the fight against terrorism was "incumbent" on all.

The SCO was formed in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan to curb extremism in the region and enhance border security. It has been learned that India and Pakistan will be become full members of the Eurasian grouping in the Astana summit.

The Chinese diplomat added that Iran now has an observer status in the organization and has for a long time "proactively participated" in its activities and has made positive contributions to the SCO's development.

Apart from China, there is also the possibility of a meeting between India and Kazakhstan.

SCO membership and the B&R initiative help Pakistan's economic development and security, and if Pakistan becomes a wealthy and prosperous country, it would be hard for extremism and terrorism to grow, and that would, in turn, improve conditions along the India-Pakistan border, Li said. Officially, more than 110 countries and about 20 worldwide organizations confirmed their participation in the exhibition. One of the challenges which India is likely to be faced with though within SCO is the endorsement of China's OBOR, which India says impinges on its sovereignty in the form of China Pakistan Economic Corridor, by all other member states.

"There is some concern that the hostility between India and Pakistan might affect the organisation's unity".

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is all set to formally introduce India and Pakistan as the six-nation grouping's newest members at its summit in Astana in Kazakhstan starting Thursday, June 8.

Whether a meeting materialises between Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif - the government said there's no proposal yet - the PM's bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO summit is expected to be a highlight in Astana. Pakistan had applied for the body's membership in 2010.

"More concretely, those three states are trying to strengthen ties with several other SCO members and SCO membership may facilitate that", he said.

According to the expert, in particular Russian Federation likely would have been more eager for Iranian membership if Hillary Clinton had become USA president. With India gaining a full membership, the country aims to achieve regional and global stability and prosperity. "They (RATS) do a series of activities, including joint exercises in fighting terrorism, maintaining a data bank of terrorists and undesirable elements etc", Srinivas said.
