Puyo Puyo Tetris can do that to a girl. That game where you drop blocks of various shapes in the pursuit of creating complete lines? Once a row is completed, it will vanish into thin air. What sets them apart, however, is how many ways and opportunities you are given to play both these games with a comprehensive suite of modes.
Other than that you can dive into Solo Arcade or Multiplayer Arcade, the difference between them either seeing you take on the CPU or up to four local players. PuyoPuyo is a little bit different, coloured blobs fall from the top of the screen instead. Billions of Tetris games are played online every year, and over 500 million Tetris mobile games have been downloaded to date.
Adventure is nearly exactly what it sounds like. It's a battle of wits and quick thinking with errors open for exploitation which can multiply to up to four people simultaneously, ramping up the tension.
Multiplayer is where the game really shines though, as it offers all of its styles of play for up to four players. The story itself is a secondary concern and is incredibly wordy.
In Puyo Puyo Tetris you can play either style, but you can also play a "fusion" mode where you get Tetris blocks and Puyo Puyo slides together on the same screen. Big Bang mode gives you a preset play field and one block, and asks you to clear the highest score with it. So when Puyo Puyo Tetris was announced, it wasn't too surprising. Fusion mixes the two. This is about as basic as Puyo Puyo Tetris ever gets and is relatively accessible, with tutorials for each available to teach the basics of tetromino block or Puyo dropping. Swap is a fast paced relay.
SEGA has announced that Puyo Puyo Tetris, a puzzle party game developed for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, is available now in the America. This last one was the most conceptually hard for me, as it has its own set of rules and behaviors unique from the others. A crazier experience however is Fusion, which places both tetriminos and puyos on the same board for everyone with the same rules from both games.
The last two game types are Big Bang and Challenge.
Challenge - Forget about the opponents and put skills to the test with Sprint, Marathon and more, like the quirky Tiny Puyo, which shrinks down Puyos to fit even more on the board.

There is an abundance of gameplay variations which steer you away from the standard way of playing these two classics to something even more frenetic. Challenge is fairly self-explanatory. If you love just Tetris, this is an excellent Tetris game, and the same goes for fans of Puyo Puyo. There's a plethora of modes available and it's a blast to have people play each and every one of them. This tough heart is hidden under a sugary surface; the entire package is delivered with Sonic Team's usual breezy hyper-enthusiasm, all bright colours, bold lines and upbeat tunes. There's also a separate Challenge Mode with even more levels to take on. When you battle, characters are constantly shouting and squabbling in what amounts to a verbal fist fight, which only makes the puzzle-battling even more intense. I didn't have this issue anywhere near as much whenever Puyo Puyo was involved, however I noticed the AI pulling off tricks that were mastered by those with Replays, so one imagines that it's part of the learning curve. If you've got friends or family in close proximity then then you can challenge them to some split screen multiplayer action that works wonderfully when you've got your Switch docked.
Personally, I prefer playing with just Tetraminos, but playing with Puyos or a combination of the two certainly makes for more tactical play. You may struggle to get your head around it as the concept just doesn't seem like it should work.
Puyo Puyo Tetris is a great crossover with a fun story and enough modes to keep things fresh for quite some time.
It's worth noting just how well suited Puyo Puyo Tetris is to Switch too. If that doesn't appeal to you, then you won't find much value in this package.
Victory against an accomplished opponent (basically everyone online right now) is dependant on engineering as many combos and chains as possible; the more you string together, the more useless "rubbish" pieces will be spewed out onto your opponent's board.
Plenty of modes and extremely fun gameplay.
