A draft of the Senate counterpart legislation to overhaul the USA health insurance system unveiled Thursday would make drastic changes to the Medicaid program, but largely retain the existing federal tax credit structure from the 2010 health care law that helps individuals afford insurance, among other provisions. Assuming no Democrat is going to vote yes, if two Republican senators vote no, the vote ends in a 50-50 tie. A vote would occur next week after budget analysts assess the package.
Those similarities could make it easier for Republicans in the Senate and House when they begin negotiations on one, unified bill that would head to the President's desk.
It would also largely retain the subsidies Obama provided to help millions buy insurance, which are pegged mostly to people's incomes and the premiums they pay. He said he needs more "information".
