He doesn't get credit for all he's done in 152 days as president, Donald Trump said Wednesday night, but he's made "amazing progress" improving the economy, lowering unemployment, curtailing illegal immigration and, in short, delivering on his promise to "Make America Great Again".

He appeared to go off-script to explain why he hired people like Gary Cohn, the former Goldman Sachs CEO, as his chief economic adviser.

US President Donald Trump has defended his record at a raucous political rally, gloating about recent Republican election victories, rejecting a Russian Federation investigation as a witch hunt and saying he is succeeding against all odds, despite no major legislative achievements.

"They spent close to 30 million dollars on this kid who forgot to live in the community that he was in", Trump said of Jon Ossoff, Handel's opponent in the 6th Congressional District, who lost by a margin of 52.13 percent to 47.87 percent.

One of the very few (inadvertently) positive outcomes of Trump's election has been an eruption of public soul-searching by thoughtful Republicans.

He then congratulated Karen Handel, who won the Georgia special election, and Ralph Norman, who won the SC special election. "If we came to you and said, 'Here's your plan, you're going to have the greatest plan in history, and you're going to pay nothing, ' they'd vote against it, folks". "It's always terrific to be able to leave that Washington swamp and spend time with the truly hard working people we call American Patriots, truly fantastic people".

During the 2016 election, many independent Iowa voters came out in support of Trump and helped him win the state.

Self-identified independents in Iowa voted for Trump over Democrat Hillary Clinton by a 13-percentage-point margin a year ago, according to exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and television networks. That margin helped Trump take the state by almost nine points after Barack Obama won it the previous two elections.

Mr Trump held a Des Moines rally in December as part of his transition-era "thank you" tour of states he had won, but has not been back to Iowa since.

"I've been talking about a plan with heart".

The Iowa trip followed visits over the past two weeks to Ohio, Wisconsin and Florida - official White House trips that featured orchestrated settings where Trump was surrounded by political supporters. They can't continue to be obstructionists.

"I think what we need is another Ryan-Murray sort of proposal", said Republican Representative Mike Simpson, a senior member of the House of Representatives' Appropriations Committee, which is in charge of writing annual spending bills.

He also said he would push for the latest technology, such as drones and sensors on harvesting equipment, so American farmers can compete with foreign agriculture interests.

The president highlighted the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and his plans to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, among other moves, as early successes of his administration.
