In both areas, temperatures were expected to fall after several days of intense heat, reaching 29 degrees Celsius (84 Fahrenheit), while in the rest of Portugal temperatures were forecast to top out at 34 Celsius.
"This is a region that has had fires because of its forests, but we can not remember a tragedy of these proportions", said Valdemar Alves, mayor of Pedrogao Grande. The huge forest fire that erupted on June 17, 2017 in central Portugal killed at least 64 people and injured 135 more, with many trapped in their cars by the flames.
Tavares said the fire in Gois had affected 20,000 hectares. The head of Portugal's League of Firefighters says he believes the fire was criminally and intentionally started and calls for an in-depth investigation.
