The almost half-a-billion dollar jackpot is the seventh largest in Powerball history, and reportedly the tenth largest in US lottery history.

A SOLE winning lottery ticket in the U.S. has bagged the entire £350 million jackpot, officials have confirmed.

That's when the amount of numbers to choose from increased. Things can potentially change even more if the victor is one of California's 39.5 million residents. The victor, who has yet to be identified, can claim a jackpot worth $447.8 million. The Powerball prize also climbed above $400 million in May, July and November of previous year, in addition to the $435 prize in February.

Given the amount of money at stake, Twitter users dropped some interesting opinions about the potential jackpot before and after the victor was announced. The odds against winning Mega Millions are 1 in 259 million.

Lottery site USAMega.com estimates the federal tax withholding on a lump sum would be somewhere north of $68 million, and state taxes could knock out up to another $24.1 million (with NY the worst offender). That's more than they spent on music, movies, books, video games and sports tickets, combined.

Gloria MacKenzie from Zephyrhills, Florida won the largest single jackpot in American lottery history, worth $590 million, in June 2013. It is the tenth largest.
