Mourinho accused of tax fraud while at Real Madrid

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will become the latest high-profile subject of a tax fraud investigation by the Spanish government.

Mourinho has reportedly defrauded Spain of €3.3m (£2.9m; $3.6m) in taxes between 2011 and 2012, prosecutors say.

The Portugal star Ronaldo, who was accused of tax evasion of around 14.7 million euros between 2011 and 2014 last week.

Both Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo published lengthy statements when they were accused of tax fraud.

"Cristiano has a contract and he is a Real Madrid player", Perez told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

The complaint was made in court on Tuesday and relates to the Portuguese coach's time in charge of Real Madrid.

The accusations against Mr Mourinho, now the manager of Manchester United, date back to his time as coach at Real Madrid.

But tax authorities later found that some of the information presented in that settlement was incorrect, the prosecutors said.

Other clients of Mendes who have ended up in Spain include the Portuguese full-back Fabio Coentrao - on the verge of joining Sporting Lisbon on loan from Real Madrid - and Colombian striker Radamel Falcao, now with Monaco but formerly at Atletico Madrid.

The hearing will take place at 09:00 GMT on July 31 in a court at Pozuelo de Alarcón, in the suburbs of Madrid, according to Spanish press reports.

Lionel Messi, of Barcelona, was also accused of tax fraud to the value of £3.5m earlier this year, and was sentenced to 21 months in prison, though he is unlikely to face any jail time.
