The 18-year-old Stroll, on the grid for the first time at his hometown race, finished a grand prix for only the third time in seven races this season but achieved his goal of earning his first points at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where he watched the Canadian Grand Prix as a child.
The victory served as a major boost to Hamilton's championship aspirations, as he cut 13 points off the lead held by Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, who now holds a 12 point margin.
Hamilton, starting from pole for a sixth time, got off to a clean start but behind him there was the usual Montreal first lap chaos.
Lewis Hamilton is hopeful Mercedes' improved understanding of his previously-misbehaving Mercedes auto has signalled a turning point in the season after his dominant victory in Canada on Sunday.
"The wind was throwing the vehicle around quite a lot and that was tricky", said Ricciardo, who has finished third in three straight races.
Explaining his reasoning for doing so, Hamilton claims it wasn't just for the rookie moving out of his way, but that he wanted to acknowledge an impressive performance from Stroll which eventually resulted in his first F1 points. After Perez was told to let Ocon pass so he could challenge Ricciardo on his fresher tires, he radioed back: "Let us race, man. Please".

He shared a first-wicket stand of 128 with Azhar Ali (59) and then put on 72 with Babar Azam (46) for the second wicket. But Pakistan veteran Mohammad Hafeez's quickfire 57 not out, including three sixes, took Pakistan well beyond 300.
Verstappen lasted just 20 laps despite jumping from fourth to second at the start. "To come here and to deliver what we have delivered is a great blow to the Ferraris".
Ricciardo finished third for the third race in a row, and drank champagne from his shoe on the podium. I was very busy for most of the race which I enjoyed, which was fun, it was good racing.
Celebrating his sixth Canadian GP win, Hamilton said: "It has been an incredible weekend, I couldn't be happier, firstly for the team". As a team, we really needed this one to get those points and, after a tough race in Monaco, I'm really impressed with what the team has done and how much we've improved in two weeks.
As they squabbled and battled, Vettel was able to get right behind them and pull off the overtake of the race: a fearless late-braking move on the dusty tarmac of the inside of turn 1 to get by Esteban Ocon.
Behind them, Sainz collided with Frenchman Romain Grosjean's Haas and then spun and crashed into the barriers, collecting Brazilian Felipe Massa's Williams along the way. Mercedes got back ahead in the constructors' standings with their first 1-2 finish of the season, while Räikkönen could only manage seventh after a brake issue struck in the closing stages of the race. "Seeing the Ferrari further back, I thought, 'That's fantastic for us'".
"I think Mercedes was very strong, but then they had a completely different race", Vettel said. "With the two Force Indias it was quite hard - they were very quick down the straights, and then when you have this phenomenon of cars behind each other all giving each other a tow and you're at the back end, it's not easy to create something".
