Some 600,000 Israeli settlers now live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, alongside around 4.9 million Palestinians.

Lieberman told journalists and ministers at the start of a cabinet meeting that, so far this year, plans had been advanced for 8,345 homes in the occupied West Bank, including 3,066 slated for "immediate construction".

This article has been excerpted from: "Israel's occupation: 50 years of Palestinian oppression".

Counting plans and tenders, Peace Now said 7,721 units had been advanced this year, nearly triple the number for all of 2016, which amounted to 2,699.

Tens of thousands of Palestinian homes and properties have been demolished, displacing entire communities from their homes, and at least 100,000 hectares of land have been seized for Israel's settlement project, including for construction and agricultural use.

The powerful settler movement wields heavy influence in Mr Netanyahu's right-wing governing coalition.

CAC, including Sachin Tendulkar , Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman would find it hard to remove Kumble at a moment's notice. Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V V S Laxman want to be suitably remunerated for picking the national coach.

In a separate process, 688 homes were advanced by the committee on Wednesday and will go out for a 60-day public comment period, during which objections can be filed.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the plan for the new housing units.

Yet the analysis presented in Chernus' article as to why the creation of a Palestinian state has not happened is historically unbalanced, unfairly places the majority of the blame on Israel, and encourages a exclusively Palestinian narrative regarding the main obstacle to a solution.

"The EU calls on both sides to engage in a meaningful process in view of reaching a negotiated two-state solution, and reiterates its readiness to support them, together with its global and regional partners", the statement said.

The settlements are illegal under global law and are seen as a major obstacle to peace sought by the Palestinians and the worldwide community.

Successive Israeli governments have invested billions of dollars over the past 50 years on settlements in the West Bank, making any withdrawal from the Palestinian territory a costly proposition. But he has given no details about how he plans to restart talks, and there is deep scepticism over whether such an effort would have any chance of success.
