But that idea [of Trump visiting the FBI] was dropped later Thursday, administration officials said, after the Federal Bureau of Investigation told the White House the optics would not be good.
Spicer was eventually asked if Trump's tweet means that he "doesn't have the full picture" when standing at the press briefing podium.
His latest flashpoint with media was over his press office's treatment of news of FBI Director James Comey's ouster. Even an amateur history student would realize that this is precisely how Nixon went down: a member of the White House staff revealed the presence of a taping system, at which point special prosecutor Archibald Cox asked for a subpoena; Nixon refused to turn over the tapes, and then ordered the Saturday Night Massacre when Cox kept demanding them and the Attorney General refused to fire him.
"In light of the varied and divergent statements from the White House press briefing room regarding the firing of both former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and former FBI Director James Comey, the production of such tapes would allow the facts of these terminations to come to light", Krishnamoorthi wrote.
Trump says Comey had told him three times he was not under investigation in the Russian Federation probe.
But Trump pressed him on whether it would be "honest loyalty".
In his short letter to Comey, Trump made a specific point of mentioning that he "appreciated" how the FBI told him three times he was not personally under investigation over Russian Federation. "You know that, I know that, everyone knows that".
"You will have that", Mr. Comey told his associates he responded.

The attack, circulated via email, corrupted accounts with "ransomware" files that locked users out of their computers. Hospitals across England have canceled appointments and turned away patients after suffering an apparent cyberattack.
Earlier, Mr Trump's press secretary, Sean Spicer, was criticised for holding a press briefing to which only selected media organisations were invited.
The FBI's Russian Federation probe is also looking into possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.
"He made a recommendation, but regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey, knowing there was no good time to do it", Trump said in his interview with Holt.
Late Tuesday, White House officials insisted that Comey was ousted because of his conduct in the probe into Hillary Clinton's handling of classified information a year ago.
In separate tweets Friday morning Trump seemed to hint at dissatisfaction with how his communications team has weathered the firestorm he created with the abrupt decision to fire Comey on Tuesday.
The White House initially said Trump fired Comey on the recommendation of the two top officials at the Justice Department, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
Earlier Thursday, on Capitol Hill, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe strongly disputed the White House's assertion that Comey had been fired in part because he had lost the confidence of the FBI's own rank-and-file.
Before the possibility that the existence of Trump's White House tapes is ruled out, though, this will just end up contributing to the maelstrom of controversy surrounding the 45th president.
