Trump decides border wall funding isn't worth shutting down the government

Donald Trump and U.S. lawmakers inched closer to a deal Tuesday avoiding a government shutdown, as the president, eager to showcase a win marking his first 100 days, retreated from a demand to fund a border wall.

"Don't let the fake media tell you that I have changed my position on the WALL".

"On funding the border wall, Trump said he could get it this week or the administration could come back to it in September", Trey Yingst, a White House correspondent for One America News, reported in a tweet.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh said Tuesday on his show that he's "very, very troubled" to see President Donald Trump appearing to back down from initial demands for funding the proposed wall along the US-Mexico border.

Congress is on the clock as they work to pass a federal spending bill by the end of the week or face a government shutdown.

Trump told conservative media outlets in a private meeting on Monday that he might put the plan on hold until Republicans draft a budget blueprint for the fiscal year that begins on October 1.

Trump did say that the wall would be built "soon". President Donald Trump could avert the risk of a government shutdown next.

"The only fly in the ointment is that the president is being a little heavy handed, and mixing in and asking for things such as the wall", Schumer said.

Over the recess, Republicans and Democrats worked carefully to craft a must-pass spending bill that all parties could agree on and could be signed by the President, but the delicate negotiations have hit a few roadblocks in recent days.

However, Republicans also insisted on increases in border security and defense spending, including money to fix existing fencing and new surveillance technology to patrol the almost 2,000-mile border.

Now both the presidency and the legislative branch are in Republican hands, but we still are facing a government shutdown.

During a brief period of questions, an unidentified reporter asked Trump whether he would be willing to sign a budget deal without funding for a border wall.

Republicans submitted to Democrats on Tuesday a funding plan that does not include border wall appropriations, the Washington Post and NBC News reported.

Both Republicans and Democrats are largely content to maintain current funding levels by passing a continuing resolution rather than hashing out an entirely new budget.

"It's good for the country that President Trump is taking the wall off the table in these negotiations", Schumer said late Monday.

"Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., observed that GOP negotiators "have simply ignored" a roster of "$18 billion in extreme cuts" offered by White House budget director Mick Mulvaney to lower the measure's cost.
