Turkish authorities have detained a Russian national over suspicions that he was plotting to attack United States fighter jets operating south of the country.

A Russian man suspected of fighting for Isil was detained in Turkey on Thursday for reportedly plotting to stage terrorist attacks on a United States military plane, according to reports.

The ISIS-affiliated man, who has traveled to Syria, also meant to attack the local Alevi community in Adana, authorities said. He also reportedly said they had previously planned to stage an attack on USA soldiers in Syria but failed. The report did not elaborate further about the Incirlik plot but said Bakiev's potential attack on Adana's religious center was to target Alevis, people who practice a branch of Shia Islam.

He had been in contact with the terror group via the Telegram messaging app to raise 2,800 Turkish liras to buy an aerial drone, the statement added.

Bakiev told police he wanted to kill Alevis because they were "enemies of Allah", the Dogan news agency reported. Officials said he admitted to surveying the Incirlik air base to plan out his strike, and attempted to attack Americans - but he was unsuccessful.

Recently in June, Adana couterterrorism police captured 11 Daesh suspects, including what the media called the Adana "emir" of Daesh, identified as 32-year-old Turkish national Abdulkerim Ç. for planning to carry out a truck bombing at the base.

ISIS has used drones to attack UK-backed coalition troops Iraq and Syria.

Turkey has been a partner in the US -led coalition against Islamic State forces, providing the coalition with access to Incirlik air base to wage strikes against the militants.
