He plugged the line constantly because it meshed with the "nice bloke but no leader" nonsense touted by Jeremy Corbyn's critics on the Labour benches after he had trounced the best they could throw up against them.
What is at stake is the kind of society that a post-EUexit Britain will be - one dominated by the austerity agenda imposed by the Tories and their Liberal Democrat allies and backed by May or the left alternative championed by Corbyn and his shadow chancellor John McDonnell.
Answering questions, Mr Corbyn said Labour's manifesto would be "fully costed and will be all accounted for and paid for".
"We understand that, in the immediate run up to an election, signalling a willingness to work with other parties might be hard but we hope you'll agree that the times we are living in require leaders to be courageous and visionary, to actively build a more positive politics".
Earlier, Mr Corbyn dismissed Mrs May's argument that she needs a fresh mandate to deliver Brexit, and said it was "extremely interesting" that she had chosen to call an election as the Crown Prosecution Service prepares to decide whether to press charges against a string of Tory MPs over allegations relating to 2015 general election expenses.
After the speech, a spokeswoman for the leader said Labour's position, backing a "meaningful vote" in Parliament, had not changed but did not explicitly rule out a second referendum.
Speaking on Wednesday's Inside Politics podcast, Prof Tim Bale said another poor election result for Labour would likely mean the party, which has been in opposition for seven years, will spend at least another 10 years in the political wilderness.
Jeremy Corbyn will promise to target the rich, claiming he will "put the interests of the majority first" and stand up for people held by a rigged economic system.
Arkansas governor disappointed by court ruling

In the last couple of weeks, Labour has set out policies that offer a clear and credible choice for the country.
The constituency was held by Labour from 1997-2005 and is the party's top target seat in London, needing just a 0.2% swing to overturn Conservative Gavin Barwell's wafer-thin majority of 165.
If Labour do not define themselves during this election, then the Conservatives will do it for them. Meanwhile, its appeal seems to go beyond Europhiles: since the referendum the party has picked up more council seats in Leave-voting areas than Remain ones.
