Ossoff Only Earned 1.3 Percent More Than Clinton In Georgia's 6th

State officials in Alabama have announced that a special off-year Senate election to replace former Sen. Republicans are bidding to prevent a major upset in a conservative Georgia congressional district Tuesday wh. Sarah Huckabee Sanders made that case within hours of Trump urging 6th District Republicans to vote and mocking Ossoff for not living in the district.

The Georgia congressional seat is attracting so much attention also because it has been the Republicans' since the late 1970s - and a candidate as strong as Ossoff is definitely a threat to them.

With a victory, Democrats would deliver a severe rebuke to President Donald Trump fewer than a hundred days into his presidency. As it is, he will go forward for a run-off on June 20th against Republican Karen Handel.

HANDEL: I - I would hope so.

"Republicans are united and ready to do everything we can to elect Karen to Congress", National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Steve Stivers said in a statement.

"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidates, BIG "R" win with runoff in Georgia", Trump tweeted.

Around 9 a.m., the president tweeted that Democrats "failed" in the Kansas race and "are now failing in Georgia".

Ossoff raised a stunning $8.3 million in the first quarter, forcing Republicans to spend heavily against him.

The outcome will not tip the balance of power in the Republican-controlled House. Another special election is coming up in Montana next month.

Sure, the going gets tougher now with the field narrowed to just two, but Trump is refusing to acknowledge reception of a powerful message from the people of Georgia.

"We have a lot of wind at our back". Tonight's results are further proof that the grassroots energy we're seeing across the country can translate to electoral progress in every zip code.

Ossoff netted 48.1 percent of the vote but did not become the clear victor of the race to fill the 6th Congressional District's House seat vacated by now-Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Special elections will hold particular importance for Democrats this year, as Republicans now control both the House and Senate. The truly important factor was that Democrats chose to nationalize the election and turn it into a referendum on Donald Trump. Republicans, by contrast, were sharply divided and split their vote among several contenders. "Bring it on!" he said. That was reflected in November, when Trump barely won the Georgia 6th over Hillary Clinton, falling shy of a majority just four years after Republican Mitt Romney garnered more than 60 percent of the presidential vote.
