Madeleine Westerhout resigned as executive assistant to the President on Thursday after Trump learned she had shared information with reporters at a recent off-the-record meeting, during which she didn't say her comments were off-the-record, according to sources familiar with her departure.

Madeleine Westerhout stepped down after President Trump found out that she disclosed the personal details to reporters while they were staying in hotels near Trump's Bedminster golf resort, the New York Times reported.

Politico reported some White House officials had become tired of her as she tried to expand her role from personal assistant to include duties associated with foreign travel and other tasks.

President Donald Trump's personal assistant Madeleine Westerhout was reportedly fired because she badmouthed Ivanka Trump and Tiffany Trump while talking to reporters.

"The breach of trust meant immediate action: Ms. Westerhout, one of the people familiar with her departure said, was immediately considered a "separated employee" and would not be allowed to return to the White House on Friday", Haberman and Karni added.

Westerhout had served as the president's personal assistant from the first day of his administration.

She reportedly shared the details to reporters during an off-the-record dinner in New Jersey while he was on his working vacation.

It was not immediately clear what the substance of the discussions about Trump's family were.

In 2016, she worked as a "greeter girl" for visitors to the Trump Tower during the transition period after the election.

However, a former senior White House official defended Westerhout to CBS and denied the report that she had cried after Trump's victory.

"I don't think it will hit me until I walk into the White House", she said in 2017, according to her college's website.

According to a report from Politico, for the past six months, Ms Westerhout tried to "expand the boundaries of her job to encompass a broader set of tasks and to include foreign travel".

The New York Times first reported Westerhout's resignation.
