Republicans in the Senate on Thursday unveiled their plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act - also known as Obamacare. McConnell stitched it together behind closed doors, potentially moving President Donald Trump and the GOP toward achieving perhaps their fondest goal - repealing Obama's 2010 statute, his proudest domestic legacy. Please the far right, lose the middle, and vice versa.

Nevertheless, she told reporters in Albuquerque, a replacement plan must protect "the most vulnerable in our state" without raising costs on families and small businesses.

The new bill would take away several health care benefits and remove the requirement for most Americans to have health insurance.

Trump welcomed the bill but indicated changes might be in store, tweeting: "I am very supportive of the Senate #Healthcarebill". "Remember, ObamaCare is dead".

McConnell may have a tough job convincing enough Republican senators that the Senate bill improves on the House version. US Capitol Police said 43 protesters were arrested and charged with obstruction.

"This bill, unfortunately, it makes things worse for those folks, because it cuts their subsidies and removes some of them from qualifying for subsidies in the first place", said Hanel.

"It's frustrating that instead of actually reviewing the legislative text some have chose to immediately oppose the bill before it was even introduced".

"This is a nasty bill and they are trying to cover it up with little things here and there", said Senator Chuck Schumer, D-NY. "So we're going to see very significant reductions in coverage in Medicaid and big cuts in federal funding that will result in significant budget gaps for states".

ALISON KODJAK, BYLINE: The Senate proposal is broadly similar to the bill passed by House Republicans last month. Dean Heller of Nevada, facing a competitive 2018 re-election battle, Rob Portman of OH and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia expressed concerns about the bill's cuts to Medicaid and drug-addiction treatment efforts. There is uncertainty over whether abortion-related provisions will meet Senate rules, but those provisions could be included in another Senate bill.

"Simply put, if there's a chance you might get sick, get old, or start a family - this bill will do you harm", Obama wrote Thursday in a lengthy Facebook post.

Democrats have long opposed repealing the Affordable Care Act and have instead tried to convince Republicans to work toward fixing problems associated with the law.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that the House Bill would kick 23 million Americans off their health plans and the legislation is unpopular with the public.
