'I don't think it's fair, ' Ryan told Don Lemon.
Indeed the best news Democrats got Tuesday night was that a different special House race, in SC, ended up closer than the Georgia contest even though it had drawn little national attention. The Carolina outcome was closer than in Georgia but drew little national attention.
"I'm sure that Nancy Pelosi believes that she is the one that can lead this party". Republican Karen Handel beat Democrat Jon Ossoff by around 5 percentage points in the suburban Atlanta district previously represented by Tom Price, now the Health and Human Services secretary.
But Handel's thank you to President Donald Trump in the same speech Tuesday night is unlikely to comfort backers of the Democrat who came to symbolize anti-Trump resistance. She has beat back all comers, including last fall, when Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan of OH ran against her. Ryan fell well short but garnered dozens of votes, enough to underscore dissatisfaction with Pelosi and with her aging leadership team that has left promising young Democrats with few places to rise.
Representative Tim Ryan, a Democratic congressman from OH who has been an outspoken critic of his party's messaging and platform, perfectly summed up Americans' feelings towards Democrats.
None of that suggests that Pelosi faces an immediate challenge to her leadership. "All the Fake News, all the money spent (equals) 0".
Handel's win was a bigger win than Trump got in that district in the presidential race, he continued, and "over the last seven months, no one has gotten worse media coverage, worse press, had more things going against him than President Trump and yet, President Trump won the Georgia district, I think by less than 2 percent last November".

If Disneyland is "The Happiest Place on Earth", Jeff Reitz may be its happiest citizen. But "there's nothing I would turn away from", he said.
Voters "want us to focus on jobs and the economy", Illinois Democratic Rep. Cheri Bustos told Fox News' "Happening Now" on Wednesday. Debbie Dingell of MI.
"It was very important to them to have someone who had relationships in the community, someone with a track record", said Handel about constituents she spoke to.
House Democratic leaders tried to play down the loss ahead of time, pointing out that the Georgia race took place on GOP-friendly terrain, as did the other recent special elections.
And after she predicted incorrectly that Democrats were poised to take back the House previous year, some of Pelosi's colleagues feel that this time around, she needs to deliver.
With Republican Karen Handel's win comes a historic moment for the Georgia delegation: the state's first Republican woman representative to be elected to Congress. Gergen's analyses did not include the California race because there was only nominal Republican opposition in the heavily Democratic district and the victor was chosen by run-off. A Handel loss would likely have been seen as not only a referendum on Mr. Trump, but a referendum on the GOP's progress - or lack thereof - on health care so far this year.
In a letter to Democrats late Wednesday, Pelosi insisted majority control of the House is up for grabs. "We must now put forth our message". "In more than 24 districts and counting, generic Democrats are leading in the polls or have already made significant shifts from the last polls available in 2016".
