Talks to support May's Conservatives making progress, DUP says

Conservative sources said talks with the DUP were "ongoing" after the Northern Irish party warned its support can not be "taken for granted".

The newspaper reports that High Court judges might be asked to access whether a "confidence and supply" arrangement between the Conservatives and the DUP would be a breach of the United Kingdom government's requirement to exercise "rigorous impartiality" in regards to Northern Ireland, as outlined in the Good Friday Agreement (1998).

Signaling the importance of Brexit negotiations with the European Union, set to continue until the spring of 2019, the speech set out the government's program for two years, rather than one.

This would be well short of a formal coalition. "DUP can't be taken for granted".

The government ploughed on today with the Queen's Speech, the set piece in which it unveils its agenda for the parliament, without a final agreement on a deal.

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace told Good Housekeeping that the more laid-back approach to the Queen's Speech was announced in April shortly after the snap election was called.

Hammond, who was nearly certainly due to be replaced at the Treasury, has been emboldened by the election result.

The opening of parliament is taking place a few weeks later than usual, because of the general election.
