His announcement comes a day after Trump's special representative Jason Greenblatt arrived for talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials on relaunching peace talks that collapsed in 2014.

He also met with former Israeli peace envoy Isaac Molcho and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump has given the task to Kushner and Greenblatt to relaunch the peace process and he would advance quickly on the matter. Deep divisions between the sides remain, clouding the chances of significant breakthroughs.

For at least two decades, the goal of US -led diplomacy has been a "two-state solution", meaning an independent Palestinian state living side-by-side and at peace with Israel.

Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon said the USA push to revive the peace process appeared to be a serious effort.

Jason Greenblatt, the United States special representative for global negotiations, arrived in Israel on Monday for preliminary discussions in Jerusalem and Ramallah, and will remain for follow-up talks after Kushner has left, Reuters reported.

While Israel has continued to expand settlements, this is the first time it has built a new one since the 1990s.

"At that stage, [Netanyahu] said, "By March 31, I will announce a new settlement for where these people can live", and [Netanyahu kept] his part of the deal".

Since then, Israel has expanded the number of settlers to nearly 700,000, thereby making negotiations for a Palestinian state in the occupied territories ineffective.

Unnamed White House officials cited by several news sources have reiterated that an agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians is a priority for the Trump administration. They said an investigation would be opened into how he managed to cross the fence.

Thousands attended her funeral Saturday night.

Israel is enduring a wave of Palestinian attacks on civilians and security forces that erupted in 2015. Some 250 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire during the same period, majority identified as attackers by Israel.
