Tropical Storm Cindy could bring some rain to parts of NJ region

Cindy knocked out power to almost 10,000 New Orleans-area residents early Wednesday, though most power was restored, the Entergy Louisiana provider said.

State and local officials in MS were mulling the possibility of emergency declarations.

Cindy is the second tropical storm to form in the Atlantic Ocean since the hurricane season officially began June 1 and the third storm of the year. GOHSEP is now in 24 hour operations and is coordinating with state agencies, parish officials and first responders who are putting resources in place for citizens who may need assistance.

This comes as Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards issues a state of emergency as the harsh weather makes its way north. Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy said there were no injuries but fences, trees and power lines were damaged.

He says heavy bands and squalls could hit in any part of South Louisiana today, tomorrow or Thursday.

On the forecast track, the center of Cindy will approach the coast of southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas late Wednesday, and move inland over southeastern Texas or southwestern Louisiana on Thursday.

Residents and officials along a stretch of the Gulf Coast from the Florida panhandle to eastern Texas are keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Cindy.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a state of emergency Tuesday because of the threat of torrential rains and other severe weather, including risky high tides and rip currents. East Texas rain totals were expected to reach anywhere from 3 to 6 inches (80-150 millimeters).

Already some flooding was reported on Alabama's Dauphin Island and flood control locks and gates were being closed along Louisiana's bayou-marbled coast. "Any way we can get to them", she said. The state said the Federal Emergency Management Agency also was moving 125,000 meals and 200,000 liters of water into Louisiana. High water vehicles from the National Guard are on stand-by. And authorities in various coastal Louisiana and MS communities handed out sandbags for areas along rivers and bayous.

Locally, we'll continue to see dreary conditions, with occasional heavier showers, on the far-eastern side of Tropical Storm Cindy through Wednesday afternoon. We will see a good chance of rain through the weekend.
