The White House has denied any collusion, and Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win. But soon after the abrupt termination, Trump told NBC News that he had been going to fire Comey regardless of any recommendations.
Rosenstein's statement read: "Americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous 'officials, ' particularly when they do not identify the country-let alone the branch or agency of government-with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated".
In his testimony on June 8, Comey said Trump expressed hope the FBI investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn would conclude, but did not direct him to do so. Comey said he believes Trump ultimately fired him "because of the Russian Federation investigation". Trump initially used that memo along with a recommendation from Sessions to justify firing Comey.
The three names being mentioned in USA media are Daniel Coats, the director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency, and Richard Ledgett, until recently Mr Rogers' deputy. He cited the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has recused himself from the Russian Federation inquiry, and his deputy Rosenstein.
President Donald Trump confirmed Friday he is under federal investigation and appeared to single out a senior Justice Department official for criticism, underscoring his growing frustration with the persistent focus on Russia's involvement in the 2016 election and possibly his campaign.
Democrats and Never Trump Republicans are setting up perjury traps just as Democrats did during Watergate and countless other investigations.
Trump fired Comey in May, just as the FBI was investigating ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.
"The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", said Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's legal team.

British newspapers, including those that backed May in the June 8 election, sharpened their criticism of the government. Thirty-seven people remained in hospital, with 17 of them in critical care.
President Donald Trump, in a furious Friday morning message, said he is being investigated for his role in firing former FBI Director James Comey and seemed to accuse the deputy attorney general of overseeing a "witch hunt" against him.
Now that the likelihood of Trump or any of his associates being found to have colluded with Russian Federation to rig the last election has dropped to approximately zero for want of evidence, this Deep State-sponsored political theater is moving on to the next best thing: obstruction of justice, a perennial crowd pleaser in the snake pit that is Washington. Contrary to the CNN story, which relied on unnamed sources, Comey's testimony confirmed Trump's assertion.
The official said the President does believe he's under investigation for obstruction as he indicated himself on Twitter.
It was not clear what prompted the statement, although it came hours after The Washington Post reported that the business dealings of Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are being examined as part of Mueller's investigation.
Pence hired Richard Cullen, chairman of law firm McGuireWoods, to help him respond to inquiries from special counsel Robert Mueller, a spokesman said.
"There's still no evidence of obstruction, and current and former leaders in the intelligence community have repeatedly said there's been no effort to impede the investigation in any way".
The transition official said the organization has also separately asked the General Services Administration to preserve records from the Trump transition that were transferred to its facilities after Trump's inauguration.
