And the trucker wasn't alone in seeing these two men. Officials credited two neighbors for holding Dubose and Rowe at gunpoint until they arrived.
The felons, Donnie Rowe, 43, and Ricky Dubose, 24, had been described as "dangerous beyond description" by Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, who coordinated the search. "I have their blood on my shoes".
The man later said he thought Rowe and Dubose would spend the night, but they only stayed a few hours.
And there are some noticeable differences in the appearance of the two men when compared to the jail photos that were circulating nationwide following their escape.
Sills said the two inmates overpowered and killed Sgt. Christopher Monica and Sgt. Curtis Billue early Tuesday on a bus that should have been secured as it carried inmates between prisons.
Sills said the inmates broke into a home on Cox Road in Morgan County right after their escape and ransacked it before stealing some food and clothes. "This is a rock quarry-type place".
Rowe and DuBose were then spotted in Rutherford County on I-24 at mile marker 91 which led to a shootout between them and police.
Rowe began serving a life sentence without parole in 2002 and Dubose began serving a 20-year sentence in 2015.
The man and woman "are lucky they're alive", Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing said.
The escapees tied the man up with a belt and put socks on his hands so that he could not use his fingers, the sheriff said. The couple who live there spent the next three hours tied up while the fugitives ate their beef stew and pilfered their valuables.
At about 5:30 p.m. CT, Swing said Dubose and Rowe chose to leave and stole the couple's Jeep Cherokee.

The men gave chase for about 10 miles and traveled at speeds around 100 mph on Interstate 24, Det.
On Thursday, officials said the two men were in custody following a vehicle chase in rush hour traffic through Rutherford County, Tennessee.
Several SUVs were hit when the escapees drove away, opening fire on deputies as they fled.
Dubose and Rowe crashed the stolen SUV and ran into some woods. Moments later, he saw them climb over his fence and approach his home, where he was alone with his little girl.
By about 5 p.m. they were on the run again, in the couple's Jeep. The pair's capture was as dramatic as their brazen escape - complete with a home invasion, a police chase, a shootout and a civilian armed with an AR-15. The suspects allegedly shot the officers with their own guns, then car-jacked a passing driver.
Audio released from the pursuit to capture Rowe and Dubose show police and deputies responding with calm and clear reactions. "Before I could get anywhere upon them, there were 25 officers out here", said Littrell.
As of Thursday, authorities had not discussed any charges against the fugitives.
He says more than 45 police officers were there within minutes, and he says "I can not tell you how grateful I was to see them arrive".
Before their capture, the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced a tip line and said pictures of the men and information about a $130,000 reward would appear on billboards in multiple states.
"With the crimes committed in Georgia, we know they could've done that here", Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn told the newspaper.
