Representative Steve Scalise, the No. 3 Republican in the House, remains in critical condition.
Scalise was among several people wounded when a rifle-wielding attacker fired on lawmakers on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, outside Washington. Two Capitol Police officers who intervened to stop the shooter were also injured along with a congressional staffer and a lobbyist. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected", Trump said in a statement.
The Nationals also issued a statement in light of Wednesday's shooting by 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., who died from his injuries.
The incident left many lawmakers on Capitol Hill stunned.
"We were sitting ducks", said Representative Roger Williams.
Trump described Scalise as a "very good friend" and "patriot", telling him: "America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this awful shooting".
"We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because, above all, they love our country". Congressman Jeff Duncan of SC said, "I'm shaken up".

Reba Winstead lives near the scene of the shooting, and says she heard at least 30 shots as she was getting her daughter dressed for school. They took cover behind vehicles and then a nearby apartment building before they were able to call the police.
An eyewitness said he saw the gunman as he was leaving the gym.
The Congressional Baseball Game, a bipartisan tradition, will go on as scheduled Thursday, according to Rep. Martha McSally, R-Arizona.
