Top Republican wounded in U.S. shooting

Members on both sides of the aisle reported a new series of threats Wednesday after the shooting at the Republican congressional baseball team's practice. They were in good spirits despite the heat and humidity as they prepared for the congressional baseball match that pits Republicans against Democrats.

Bailey is a Capitol Police special agent who is part of the congressional security detail.

"When the leadership of this country is civil towards one another, maybe the public will start being civil towards one another too", said Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Penn., the Democratic manager. The assailant later died after the incident.

Shortly after the shooting, Bernie Sanders, the former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said on the Senate floor that the shooter apparently was a volunteer for his campaign a year ago.

In word and manner Trump bore little resemblance the political street fighter who has carried his campaign's brass knuckles with him to the Oval Office.

"He will recover from this assault and, Steve, I want you to know that you have the prayers not only of the entire city behind you but of an entire nation and frankly the entire world", Trump said.

"I think we're facing a culture of intolerance in our country that's risky", he said.

Scalise's office said doctors operated on the congressman at a Washington hospital.

Williams also injured his leg when he jumped headfirst into the dugout - about a six-foot drop, he said - where lawmakers had taken refuge. "They were shooting at each other ..."

"He picked up the rifle, and so I saw the rifle, and the thought that ran through my mind. because it was so out of context, why would anybody have a rifle there?"

Scalise was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for surgery, where he remained in critical condition. "The whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone", the statement read. After an exchange of gunfire with police, the shooter died. "The officers acted, I believe, heroically today".

"I told him they were Republicans". He said, 'OK, thanks, ' and turned around. In 2011, a gunman shot Rep.

Mr Scalise was shot at a congressional baseball practice just outside of Washington. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at the practice.

"We were doing batting practice, and all of a sudden, someone came with a rifle". "I think much of the anger has been recently directed at the Republicans - being in the majority right now".

Police rule out finding blaze survivors in London tower block
Outside the cordons, impromptu tributes had appeared, with photos of missing people, messages of condolences, flowers and candles. The emergency services said it was too early to say what had caused the inferno, which left the block a charred, smoking shell.

I said the same thing when some on the left tried to blame Trump's attacks on the press for Montana Rep. Greg Gianforte body-slamming a reporter.

Trump described Scalise as a "very good friend" and "patriot", telling him: "America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this awful shooting".

Brooks said that Scalise, 51, was down on the ground with what Brooks described as "a hip wound".

"There is not a whole lot you can do", Brooks told CNN.

"If he had gotten on the field, we had nowhere to go", Williams said.

Woodruff said he ducked into a garage and called 911.

Reba Winstead lives near the scene of the shooting, and says she heard at least 30 shots as she was getting her daughter dressed for school.

Another witness to the event, Benjamin Childers, posted a live stream of the aftermath of the shooting on Periscope.

That resident, Benjamin Childers, added, "We had three members of Congress [who] took shelter in our apartment". Lester Holt will anchor "NBC Nightly News" from Virginia.

Local media report there is a major police presence after the attack. All Capitol complex buildings remained open.

However, no votes are expected in the House today. House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wis. walks towards the House floor on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, June 14, 2017.

There will be plenty of security at the charity baseball game, which is to be played as scheduled Thursday.

It's become a charity fundraiser. The Democratic baseball team invited the Republican team to the Democratic Club Wednesday night for dinner.

Police say they believe they have the suspect in custody, and that the victims are being transported to the hospital.
