Attorney General Jeff Sessions' testimony and refusal to answer questions posed to him by the members of the Senate Intelligence Committee was "deeply troubling", Sen.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions finishes testifying before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, US, June 13, 2017.

"I was your colleague in this body for 20 years, and the suggestion that I participated in any collusion, that I was aware of any collusion with the Russian government to hurt this country that I have served with honour for 35 years, to undermine the integrity of our democratic process, is an appalling and detestable lie", Sessions told the committee.

His highly anticipated testimony came less than a week after former FBI Director James Comey sat in the same hot seat.

Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he believes Trump fired him last month because he resisted a request to drop the Russian Federation investigation, especially as it related to former national security adviser Michael. "I am following the historic policies of the Department of Justice" on private discussions with the White House.

The former Alabama senator also defended himself against accusations that he misrepresented himself during his confirmation hearing when he said he hadn't met with Russian officials during the campaign. But: When Comey brought it up the next day, Sessions said he agreed it wasn't a good idea to be alone with the president. But investigators began probing Trump for obstruction of justice soon after Comey's termination.

The report goes on to state that while Trump is suspicious of Mueller and that he is still furious with Attorney General Sessions for recusing himself from overseeing the Russian Federation probe. "I have confidence in Mr. Mueller", he said.

"I recused myself from any investigation into the campaigns for president, but I did not recuse myself from defending my honor against scurrilous and false allegations", he said. Sessions said: "It did not violate my recusal". Richard Burr, committee chairman to Sessions before his opening testimony.

Wyden asked Sessions what problematic issues exist. I can tell you that for absolute certain. There are none, Senator Wyden. "This is a secret innuendo being leaked out there about me, and I don't appreciate it".

Earlier this week, a month after Trump fired Comey, a close associate of Trump said the president was considering firing Mueller as well, though he was installed by the Justice Department to conduct the Russian Federation investigation only a few weeks ago.

The Department of Justice appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the Russian Federation probe shortly after Trump's decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey.

Later in the afternoon, the President will sign an Executive Order. Mueller is overseeing a host of investigations involving people who are or were in Trump's orbit, people familiar with the probe were quoted as saying. White House officials said the president is not considering such a step.

While the Justice Department has said Mr Sessions recused himself in March because of his involvement in Mr Trump's campaign, Mr Comey testified that the Federal Bureau of Investigation knew of information that would have made it "problematic" for Mr Sessions to be involved.

"I don't think it's for me to say whether the conversation I had with the president was an effort to obstruct". That supposedly occurred during an event in April a year ago at Washington's Mayflower Hotel, where candidate Trump was giving his first major foreign policy speech. In an interview with MSNBC, Franken said the meeting is referred to an intercepted conversation "between Kislyak and his people". Dianne Feinstein, the panel's top Democrat.
