The Republican based a large part of his campaign on anti-Islamic and anti-immigrant rhetoric, which saw him draw large crowds and votes across the nation.

A group opposed to the practice of Sharia law had scheduled a protest for Saturday, June 10, at the memorial for those who died in the terrorist attack of December 2, 2015, at the intersection of Waterman Avenue and Orange Show Road in San Bernardino. The organization says it opposes discrimination and supports the rights of those subject to Shariah. A dozen police surrounded them as counter-protesters shouted several feet away.

The demonstrations were organized by ACT (American Congress for Truth) for America, which describes itself as a "grass-roots national security organization", but is considered as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

In New York and Chicago, a few dozen anti-Shariah demonstrators were outnumbered by counter-protesters.

About 300 people attended San Bernardino's rallies.
